Happy Independence Day!! There goes my special post for this special day, saluting the great poet of all times, Guru Rabindranath Tagore.
Jodi tor daak shune keu naa ashe tobe ekla cholo re
Tobe ekla cholo, ekla cholo, ekla cholo, ekla cholo re
Jodi keu kothaa naa koye, ore ore o abhaagaa, keu kothaa na koye
Jodi shobai thaake mukh phiraaye shobai kore bhoye
Tobe poraan khule o tui mukh phute tor moner kothaa, eklaa bolo re
Jodi shobai phire jaaye, ore ore o abhaagaa, shobai phire jaaye
Jodi gohan pothe jaabaar kaale keu phire naa chaaye
Tobe pothera kaantaa o tui rokto maakhaa choronatole eklaa dolo re
Jodi aalo naa dhore, ore ore o abhaagaa, aalo na dhore
Jodi jhor-baadole aadhaara raate duyaar deye ghore
Tobe bajraanole aapon buker paajor jaaliye niye ekalaa jolo re
English translation:
Let me allow to have the pleasure of giving my own Telugu translation of it.. (I apologize for any mistakes in advance)
- If they answer not to thy call walk alone.
- If they are afraid and cower mutely facing the wall,
- O thou unlucky one,
- open thy mind and speak out alone.
- If they turn away, and desert you when crossing the wilderness,
- O thou unlucky one,
- trample the thorns under thy tread,
- and along the blood-lined track travel alone.
- If they do not hold up the light when the night is troubled with storm,
- O thou unlucky one,
- with the thunder flame of pain ignite thy own heart
- and let it burn alone.

Hi Navya,
ReplyDeleteNice Post! This morning I heard the Telugu version of the 'Ekla cholo re' song on AIR Hyderabad A (738 KHz) station. The lyrics are great; but I don't remember all of them and was looking for them when I hit your blog. Your translation is pretty good :) (I have working knowledge of Bengali and more than working knowledge of Telugu).
I think we should get hold of the lyrics of the song, which was set to the same tune as the Bengali song. It runs something like, "NI kEka vini evvaru rAka pOte, okadive pOvOi; nuvvokkadive, okkadive, okkadive, okadive pOvOi...
Hi Avvaippaatti
DeleteThanks a lot. Will definitely post it if I find the telugu version anywhere. Coz I just love this song.
Cheers,
Navya
